Like mother, like daughter: Photo of Delta co-pilots goes viral on social media

A sweet photo of a mother and daughter who got to pilot together on a recent Delta flight has gone viral on social media and has lifted off discussions about the need for more women to be in the industry.

John R. Watret, chancellor of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide campus, had a chance encounter with Capt. Wendy Rexon and First Officer Kelly Rexon, and snapped the photo.

“Just flew from LAX to ATL on Delta piloted by this mother daughter flight crew,” he said on Twitter. “Great Flight. Inspiring for young women.”

The tweet has since gotten tens of thousands of likes and retweets.

Watret said the online traction meant a lot, considering the university is committed to providing more opportunities to women in aviation, the university said in a press release.

Only about 7 percent of U.S. pilots certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration were women as of 2017, according to the FAA's Aeronautical Center.

Kelly Rexon’s sister is also a pilot.
